OpenAI Rolls Out Advanced Voice Feature: New Voices and Faster Conversations

OpenAI has started rolling out its new “Advanced Voice” feature, offering faster, more human-like interactions in over 50 languages. Users can also choose from five new voice options: Arbor, Maple, SXol, Spruce, and Vale.
OpenAI has begun the highly anticipated rollout of its “Advanced Voice” feature, designed to enhance user experience with faster, more natural communication. The update, which was announced on Sept. 24, 2024, will be available to all Plus and Team users throughout the week. The feature marks a significant step in improving the real-time conversational abilities of ChatGPT, which now runs on the latest 4.0 model.
Faster, More Fluid Conversations

The new voice upgrade enhances the fluidity and intuitiveness of ChatGPT interactions, allowing users to interrupt or change topics mid-conversation. In addition to smoother speech recognition, responses are now quicker, and the overall experience is more natural. This improvement is part of OpenAI’s mission to make interactions with AI more lifelike, blurring the lines between human and machine communication.
Meet the New Voices
With this update, OpenAI has also introduced five new voices: Arbor, Maple, SXol, Spruce, and Vale. These voices provide users with a broader range of vocal styles to customize their experience, in addition to the existing options such as Breeze, Juniper, Cove, and Ember. Each new voice is crafted to sound more human-like, boosting engagement and making interactions feel more relatable and dynamic.
Customization and Memory Features
OpenAI has also introduced a memory feature that allows ChatGPT to remember key details from previous conversations. Users can set custom instructions to personalize future interactions, making the chatbot smarter and more context-aware over time. This memory function enhances the user experience by creating more seamless and tailored responses during conversations.
Some Limitations Remain
Despite the advanced features, OpenAI acknowledges that the voice functionality may encounter challenges in noisy environments or when using Bluetooth devices. The company has noted that in-car Bluetooth and speakerphone setups may not yield the best results, but they are committed to continuous improvement in these areas.
Lingering Controversy
One point of controversy remains: the removal of the “Sky” voice model. Originally planned as part of the update, the model was scrapped following a legal dispute with actress Scarlett Johansson, who claimed that the voice closely resembled her own. Although OpenAI CEO Sam Altman denied any intentional resemblance, the decision to remove the model has disappointed some users.
