This move is unusual for Apple, which typically avoids direct startup investments, but it signals a shift in the company’s approach as it seeks to strengthen its position in the increasingly competitive AI landscape.

Thrive Capital, a leading player in this round, has already committed $1 billion. Microsoft, which holds a 49% stake in OpenAI after multiple investments totaling $13 billion, is also participating. While Apple and Nvidia’s specific contributions have not been disclosed, their involvement could significantly impact the AI sector.

In recent developments, OpenAI announced a major rise in ChatGPT users, doubling to over 200 million weekly users within the past year. However, the company’s annual revenue of $3.4 billion fell short of higher expectations.

If Apple goes ahead with this investment, it would mark a notable deviation from its usual approach to AI. Apple has been integrating AI features into its operating systems and exploring collaborations with other tech giants like Google and Meta. Historically, Apple has focused on strategic investments, including $1 billion in SoftBank’s Vision Fund and another $1 billion in the Chinese ride-hailing company DiDi Chuxing to acquire crucial technologies for its products.
